About the National
Energy Data Bank.
NEDB is the Energy Commission of Nigeria's data bank. It collects the country's energy figures from the agencies that produce them, checks them, and publishes them free, with the source and every correction on the record.
Mandate and sources
Section 5(g) of the Energy Commission of Nigeria Act (CAP. E10, LFN 2004) gives the Commission the duty to collate, analyse and publish information on energy from all sources. NEDB is how the Commission carries out that duty in one place, for petroleum, gas, electricity, renewables and solid fuels.
Its figures sit inside the National Statistical System set up by the Statistics Act 2007, which the National Bureau of Statistics coordinates. Personal data from energy assessments is handled under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
How figures are produced, checked and corrected is set out in the Code of Practice and the release calendar.
NEDB compiles what these bodies publish or submit. Every record names its source; the counts below are the records the bank holds from each today.

Current means the newest figure is within six months for monthly series, or last year or later for annual ones. The table reads the live registry each time the page is built.
Using the data
How figures are kept honest
Every upload is checked before it is saved: the period format, the unit against the bank's list of units, and the area code. Rows that fail are shown back with the reason.
No figure enters the bank without the agency it came from. The source stays with the figure through every revision.
A changed figure keeps its history. The revision log shows what changed, when and by whom, and each record shows whether it is provisional or revised.
Periods are monthly, quarterly or annual in ISO 8601 form. Areas use ISO 3166-2:NG state codes, or NGA for the whole country.
When an agency changes how it measures something, the old figures stay as they were and new ones carry the new method, so a break in a series is never hidden.
On the first of each month the whole bank is frozen into an edition of record with a checksum, so anyone can prove which figures were published when.
History
The Energy Commission of Nigeria is established by Act No. 62 of 1979 to coordinate national energy policy. Section 5(g) gives it the duty to collate, analyse and publish information on energy from all sources.
The Federal Executive Council approves the National Energy Policy, prepared by the ECN. It was launched in 2005 and has since been reviewed.
The ECN Act is consolidated in the Laws of the Federation as CAP. E10, LFN 2004.
The Statistics Act 2007 establishes the National Bureau of Statistics and the National Statistical System, the framework Nigerian official statistics are produced within.
The Petroleum Industry Act creates NUPRC and NMDPRA, the two regulators whose petroleum figures the bank compiles.
The Federal Executive Council approves the National Energy Master Plan on 27 April 2022, turning energy policy goals into programmes that need measuring.
The Electricity Act 2023 replaces EPSRA 2005 and lets states regulate their own electricity markets, changing who reports power sector figures.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 sets the rules for personal data collected through energy assessments.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025 replaces the Federal Inland Revenue Service from 1 January 2026, the source for energy sector tax data.
NEDB goes live as a digital, API-accessible data bank, with checked uploads, a public revision log and monthly frozen editions of record.
Access and contact
Published tables, time series, charts and the API are free and need no account. Please cite the series and its source. Personal data from assessments is never published; only anonymised totals for areas with enough responses are. See the terms of data use.
